What is EMF?

When electrical and magnetic fields are combined, they are referred to as an electromagnetic field (EMF), or electromagnetic radiation.  EMFs can be found within our bodies, in the Earth, and within manmade electronic devices.  When manmade EMFs interfere with our natural biological EMFs, poor health and disease occurs.

Where does EMF come from?

The primary EMFs we are exposed to are:

  • Magnetic and electrical fields.
  • Stray electric current and voltage.
  • Dirty electricity (the electromagnetic energy flowing along a conductor that deviates from a pure 50/60 Hz sine wave and has both harmonic and transient properties).
  • Radio frequency and microwave radiation

What causes EMFs?

Modern electronic devices increase our exposure levels drastically.  These devices include:

  • Cell or cordless phones, cell towers, cell antennas, gaming controllers, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
  • Energy efficient lighting, heating ventilation, air conditioning systems and pool pump motors
  • Solar electric systems and electric car chargers
  • Electric wiring, powerlines, and smart meters
  • Computers, laptops, and tablets
  • Baby monitors, wearable wireless devices (e.g., headphones)

How are high-powered electronic devices we use dangerous to us?

Our bodies are electrically charged.  The high-powered devices we use emit high-powered vibrations that collide with our body’s weak direct electrical (DC) current.  Epidemiological studies have shown that the rise of disease has increased alongside the increase in electronic device use.

What is the Building Biology Institute?

The Building Biology Institute is a non-profit organization that guides both the general public and working professionals (architects, builders, engineers, interior design professionals, physicians, nurses, and other health care practitioners, real estate professionals, etc.) to an understanding of the vital and complex interrelationship between natural and man-built environments.  The Institute educates its students on methods of merging these complementary environments into greater harmony and planetary health.  The Institute’s mission is to create a global village of awareness.

What are the 25 Building Biology Principles?

The 25 Building Biology Principles are guidelines that were established to help ensure a dwelling is life-enhancing for all its inhabitants, not detrimental to its builders, and built with as little disruption to the environment as possible.  These guidelines are applicable to new construction and renovations.
